Peak Foliage Conditions Will Arrive This Weekend in Northern Maine

October 1, 2025 – With autumn in full swing, Mainers and visitors can look forward to brilliant fall colors spreading across the state. The fourth 2025 Fall Foliage Report from the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry (DACF) reports moderate to high color change (50-70 percent) throughout most of Maine with moderate (less than 50 percent) leaf drop. Northern Maine (zones 6 and 7) is showing significant color change (approaching 70-100 percent) with moderate leaf drop.

This Week’s Foliage Outlook

“While we are seeing peak conditions in northern Maine and high color in portions of the western mountains, colors are still emerging daily in central and coastal regions,” said Gale Ross, fall foliage spokesperson. “This week’s seasonal days and cooler nights are helping bring out the best of Maine’s autumn palette.  The canopies in western Maine are showing off their most vibrant colors, which makes for perfect timing for our leaf enthusiasts,” adds Ross.

• The first two weekends in October celebrate fiber arts across the state during the Maine Fiber Tour & Trail, when fiber farms, mills and artisans open their doors to visitors. • From Oct. 3–5, the Freeport Fall Festival fills downtown Freeport with art, live music and Maine-made foods. The family-friendly event showcases more than 150 artists and makers, making it an ideal stop for early holiday shopping or simply soaking up a festive fall atmosphere.
• 4–5 features two statewide celebrations of Maine craftsmanship and flavor: Maine Craft Weekend, with open studios, galleries and events across the state highlighting the work of local artisans and Maine’s Garlic Fest, held in Skowhegan, featuring garlic-themed foods, cooking demonstrations and live music.
• With fall colors peaking in western Maine, the Rangeley Lakes National Scenic Byway is one of the state’s most iconic foliage drives. The 35-mile loop travels through mountains, lakes and valleys with stops at some of Maine’s most photographed overlooks. Don’t miss Height of Land, where sweeping views of Rangeley Lake and Mooselookmeguntic Lake capture the season’s brilliance. The byway also offers access to trails, waterfalls and charming small towns, making it ideal for a weekend getaway or a leisurely afternoon drive.
