Maine Snow Report

March 27, 2019 — The Maine Office of Tourism, in collaboration with Ski Maine Association and the Maine Snowmobile Association (MSA), reports that Maine has seen an amazing winter for winter recreation, with more than six months of skiing and 90,000 snowmobile registrations.

Currently, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) snow depth map shows that the majority of northern Maine has maintained a considerable snow base, upwards of two feet.

Skiing in Maine

March continues to be an excellent ski month for the state’s downhill and Nordic ski centers.

“Nearly every ski area has operated throughout March, and we saw record crowds following last week’s snowstorm,” said Greg Sweetser, executive director of Ski Maine. “This weekend will wind down the season at the community ski areas and be the official spring kick-off at the larger destination resorts.”

Sugarloaf and Sunday River will continue to operate in April, so pack sunscreen and head to Maine’s mountains for a spring skiing getaway. For Nordic skiers, yesterday’s Maine Huts & Trails snow report showed the major trails still have at least 29 inches of base snow with a frozen granular surface.

Sweetser also reported that according to Ski Maine’s calculations, there were 25 solid weeks of skiing throughout the 2018-2019 winter season, equating to more than six months of skiing.

World Pro Ski Tour – March 29-30 at Sunday River
With a field of Olympians, and National and NCAA Alpine Ski Champions, the Visit Maine Pro Ski Championships will be a great opportunity to watch an amazing group of world-class athletes as they face off head-to-head in dual super slalom action with jumps. This is the fourth and final stop of this year’s World Pro Ski Tour and over $150,000 in prize money is being awarded over the course of the season.

Spring Après Ski Concert Series – March 30 at Sunday River

Banked Slalom – March 30-31 at Sugarloaf

Annual Beach Bash – March 31 at Lost Valley

Maine Snowmobiling

Maine has reached 90,000 snowmobile registrations this winter season, the first time to pass this number in 10 years.

While Maine has been experiencing spring weather despite the chilliness today, spring riding is not over. Groomers have started to slow their trail maintenance but have continued to groom when temperatures dip below freezing at night.

MSA Executive Director Bob Meyers said, “Let’s give a hand to the Maine snowmobile clubs who have and will continue to do a terrific job this season as long as the snow and grooming funds continue. Go easy on the trails and you will likely be able to ride well into April.”

Trails of interest this week include Aroostook, the Katahdin region and Portage. Snowmobile trail conditions are updated daily and should be checked prior to heading out for a ride.
